Go With the Flow – A Brief Look at Public Transit

Public transit is the system put in place to aid the public in regards to their needs for transportation. This can include a whole range of vehicles, the most prevalent being buses, passenger trains, subways, shuttle services and shared taxis. I say shared taxis, because taxis themselves are more like chauffeur providers, than public transit, unless they are being shared by more than one person.

Traditionally, the people who were most likely to use public transit were people that didn't drive, low income families without a vehicle and school aged people on their way to a high school, college or university. Now it's becoming more and more popular to the people who work in the center of a large city where getting around by car is becoming increasingly more difficult.

The benefits of a system such as this are immeasurable. The major factors however include that it is better for the environment as a whole, it relieves some of the strain on our already congested roads and it reduces the number of accidents on our streets. It can also greatly benefit certain people because of it being less of a hassle if driving stresses them out plus can be more economical in the long run over buying, maintaining and gassing a vehicle of their own.

Like any other good thing, there are of course some downfalls to using public transit. These can include having to follow someone else's schedule, rather than your own, which may mean you will have to come and go at times that are not quite as convenient for you. Another major problem is the fact that you can only travel as far as the transit system is willing to take you. This can severely limit your options if you wish to go somewhere out of the city.
